Starting a Profitable Farming Business in Kenya: Inputs, Credit and Getting Paid

What actually determines whether a smallholder farm makes money, from seed choice to offtake contracts.

Most farms fail on price, not yield

The common failure is not a bad harvest. It is harvesting well and then selling into a glut at whatever a broker offers at the gate.

Agreeing a price before you plant changes the economics more than any input does.

Inputs

Certified seed matters. Uncertified seed is cheaper and is the most expensive saving in farming. Check for the certification mark and buy from registered agrodealers.

Soil testing before buying fertiliser is worth the cost. Applying the wrong fertiliser is money spent making no difference.

Credit

Input credit repayable at harvest matches farming cash flow better than a monthly repayment loan. Weather-index insurance pays out on rainfall data rather than requiring a loss assessment.

Offtake

An offtake contract fixes a buyer and a price before planting. It reduces your upside in a shortage year but removes the risk of having no buyer at all.

For high-value crops such as avocado for export, meeting grade requirements matters more than volume. Ask for the specification in writing before you plant.

Post-harvest

Post-harvest loss is where margin disappears. Cold storage for perishables and proper drying for grain typically pay for themselves in a single season.
